The Queen of Hearts has been sending fear down our spines for almost 150 years. The fictional character was created by Lewis Carroll and brought to life in his timeless classic Alice in Wonderland. She ruled over Wonderland with her foul temper and violent behavior. Just a playing card, she scared the wits out of Wonderland’s residents and is just as powerful in pop culture today. Check out why the Queen of Hearts is so memorable and even why we love her.

“Off with his head!”
It is safe to say the Queen of Hearts liked to keep her punishments short and simple. One of the most famous quotes from Alice in Wonderland, “off with their heads” is still heard and mocked today in pop culture. Anything and everything would make the Queen’s short temper snap with a beheading as the consequence. However, the King of Hearts granted pardons to many of the Queen’s victim and very few heads rolled in the storybook.

Plays by her own rules
Who could forget the croquet match between the Queen and Alice? The average game of croquet consists of wooden mallets and stakes, solid balls and wired hoops with directions to follow. The Queen, however, feels free to play by her own rules with flamingos as mallets, hedgehogs as balls and her servants as hoops guaranteeing her a win every time. If not, well it’s off with winner’s head!

Power and Authority
It is no question that the Queen of Hearts possessed power and authority, something we all wish we had a little bit of. Wonderland’s residents lived in fear and went out of their way to please the Queen. Throughout the story, the White Rabbit is a nervous wreck and in chapter eight, Alice comes upon three cards painting roses red in fright of the Queen’s dislike for white roses. Now if we could only find servants like that.

Makes Delicious Tarts
“The Queen of Hearts she made some tarts all on a summer’s day. The Knave of Hearts he stole the tarts and took them clean away.” The Knave will agree the Queen knows how to bake! Published before Alice in Wonderland, the classic nursery rhyme was incorporated into Carroll’s story with the Knave’s trial. The trial takes place at the story’s climax with Alice testifying and admiring the tarts herself.

One of a kind
Don’t get the Queen of Hearts mixed up with the Red Queen, or your head will roll. The Red Queen appears in Carroll’s sequel Through the Looking Glass and is represented by a chess piece. Still an antagonist, the Red Queen doesn’t have a foul temper and is defeated by Alice after she herself becomes a queen. In both Disney versions, the 1951 animated film and Tim Burton’s adaptation, the two queens are combined to create one unforgettable character.

Home made Fancy Fairy Wings for Halloween / Dress up Parties

Who doesn’t believe in fairies? With this costume, a beautiful fairy will magically appear on your doorstep.

  • Begin by creating the wire wings. Start with a coiled roll of 9-gauge aluminum wire (available at hardware stores). Cut a13-foot length and bend it in half. Twist a small loop at the bend (use pliers, if necessary).
  • About 8 inches up from the loop, form a large wing shape with 52 inches of wire. Repeat on the other side. Close the wings with a twist as shown. (Note: the wing can be bent into different shapes).
  • Form a triangle, about 5 by 8 by 8 inches, above the loop from step 1. Twist and trim the ends so they do not protrude from the triangle; duct-tape them, if necessary.
  • Cut the legs off a pair of queen-size panty hose. Stretch one leg over one wing, secure with a pipe cleaner, and stretch the excess over the triangle. Repeat on the other side.
  • Tie the middle of a 7-foot piece of ribbon to the bottom of the triangle. Thread the ribbon around the triangle so the wings can be worn like a backpack.
  • Next, have your fairy put on her pink outfit. Fashion a simple crown for her hair out of a starry garland. Add some star stickers and/or body glitter to her arms and cheeks. Hand her a vial of fairy dust (glitter), tied into a necklace with string.
  • Finally, help her put on the Wire Wings.

    DIY Halloween Bee Costume

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes, DIY Costumes — cu2nite @ 3:16 PM

Here’s a simple and inexpensive way to create a cute bumblebee costume.  You’ll need the following materials for your costume:

    • A bright yellow T-shirt, preferably long sleeve
    • Black fabric paint
    • Ruler or tape measure
    • Pencil or marker
    • Girls plastic headband
    • Black pipe cleaners
    • Black pom poms (1 inch size)
    • Hot glue gun
    • Large cone or plastic funnel (for stinger)
    • Black leggins or close-fitting sweat pants

Begin by marking horizontal lines on bodice of the yellow T-shirt, using the pencil or marker and the measuring device.  Leave a distance of about 2 inches between the lines, and continue each line around to the back of the shirt so the stripes will wrap around the person like the stripes on the body of a bee.  You should end up with a series of horizontal stripes, each about 2 inches in width that wrap around the bodice of the shirt.  Leave the sleeves alone.

Using the black fabric paint, color alternating stripes black, leaving the ones in between unpainted.  This will result in alternating stripes of black and yellow to simulate a striped pattern on a bee’s body.  You may want to place some cardboard inside the T-shirt before you paint it so the color doesn’t bleed through.  Allow the paint to dry overnight.  If you are in a hurry, you can speed up the drying process by using a blow dryer on the painted areas.  To add dimension, try using fabric “puff paint”.  This will actually puff up. Even of you used a blow dryer to dry the paint faster, it’s still best to let the paint cure overnight.

While the paint on the T-shirt is drying and curing, gather materials for the bee antennae.  You’ll need the headband, pipe cleaners, pom poms and glue gun.  Plug in the glue gun and allow the glue to heat up while you wrap the pipe cleaners around the headband to simulate antennae.  Secure each one with a dot of hot glue and gently press together until secure.  Now gently apply some hot glue to one of the pom poms and quickly set a pipe cleaner end into the glue.  Hold firmly in place until completely cooed and dried.  Now repeat with the other pipe cleaner and pom pom.  You should now have a headband with two antennae springing up from it like springy lollipops.

When the costume is ready to be worn, slip on the black leggings or stretchy pants and carefully insert the cone or funnel into the posterior section of the pants.  This will serve as the bee’s stinger.  There should be no need to secure the cone in place.  The stretchy pants should keep it secure.  Remember not to sit down or else you may “bee” surprised!  (By Mike Tattersall)

    Instant Costume Cosplay Diy Idears

    funny-looking-lady-costume

So. You’re standing around your room. You feel like cosplaying but don’t have the time, money, patience or skill to make some huge elaborate costume. Or maybe you’re going to a con last minute and everyone else is dressing up and you don’t wanna feel left out. And you’re a girl…

There are a few things every good amateur female cosplayer, such as myself, should keep around. Some are easier to find than others, but it’s all about improv!

Some good things to have that you should be able to find in a consignment shop, thrift store, or in the back of your mom or grandmother’s closet is (1) a crinoline and (2) a pleated skirt with suspenders.

A crinoline is often mistaken for petticoats. A crinoline is basically a skirt made of layers and layers of stiff, lacey material that women wore under skirts to make them poofy back in the olden days. I inherited one of these amazing things from my step-great-grandmother for a play I was in. I was required to be a french-style maid and wanted to have as poofy a skirt as possible. Needless to say, I had the best and poofiest costume. A crinoline is priceless for any last minute amateur cosplay costume. It’s worn under a loose, long (maybe tea length. If you can find one, buy a loose ankle length and pin up the hems) skirt. You can add an apron and a matching colored shirt, and a maid’s hat made out of a paper doily folded in half and hot glued to a ribbon for a non-slutty maid costume in about 10 minutes. Add kitty ears or even a tail for an instant anime classic. Experiment with other things. It also might make a good poofy lolita skirt with some ribbons and bows added to the skirt.

A pleated skirt with suspenders is also great for instant school girl costumes. I got mine from my step-mom from in the 90’s when she was younger. Paired with a classy white button down, long sleeved shirt, one of my daddy’s ties (any style, or you can make and ascot with a colored scarf and a brooch*), and either a pair of flats, chunky loafer-style platforms, or loafers, it makes a great costume. Just pair it with the anime hairstyle of choice and voila! Of course, you can always add some animal ears for that weird furry touch.

Some other things that are great to have: animal ears, wings, and cheap wigs.
Most of that crap can be bought at a party shop. Animal ears show up around holidays. Bunny ears show up around Easter, so grab a few pair in different colors during those handy after-holiday sales. Kitty ears are abundant during Halloween. Party shops probably carry them all year round, so give those party shops a try. Because they also carry wigs year round as well. Wigs are great. During Halloween, they are abundant in all major retailers. Wal-Mart and Target, etc. They come in all sorts of weird styles and colors. Party shops usually carry better quality, quantity and have a better selection. Party shops are an amateur cosplayer’s best friend. It’s best to stock up on animal ears and wigs during those after-holiday sales if you are shopping at a Wal-Mart or Target. It’s impossible to find costume pieces like that not during a holiday. But major-retailers are great for find bows, hairpieces and jewelry. Not to mention parts for last minutes weapons, staffs, and other accessories.

Wings are a little harder to come by. Try one of those nifty party shops. During Halloween, you’re able to find angel wings, fairy wings, bat wings… all very good to have. So stock up!

Now, lets say it’s not a holiday and you aren’t able to get to a party shop. So, my best advice to you is this: Check costume online store, party shops, stock up during holidays like Halloween and Easter, and check with the old people. [shonenchicklets, Nov 09]
