How to make Gothic Lolita Fairy / Angel / Devil Costumes

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes — cu2nite @ 1:03 PM

gothic-dark-angel-costume-wings

Gothic Lolita style is usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims. Skirts are knee length and may have a crinoline or petticoat to add volume. As in mainstream Japanese fashion, over-knee socks or stockings are extremely popular. Black fishnet stockings and white or black tights are also common. Shoes or boots with high heels – though not usually stiletto heels – such as Mary Janes, complete the look. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular especially with “EGL” types, who may also favour long skirts and jackets rather than the overtly “childish” designs of typical gothloli’s. Apart from the occasional shortness of skirts, designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves.

Some additions may include an Alice in Wonderland-style apron, tiny top hats, parasols, lace gloves, and lace headpieces. Mostly black or white, headgear might consist of a headband with ruffles, ribbons, lace or bows. Sometimes even bonnets are worn. Hair may be curled to complete the porcelain doll look. The naturally dark Japanese hair color may be lightened to blonde or kept black. Some may choose to wear wigs as well.

Makeup is used sparingly and is seen more often with EGL styles than with other gothloli styles. Black eyeliner is typical. A pale complexion is preferred, so white foundation might be used. Red or black lipstick is seen but lighter makeup is the rule.

While these outfits look complicated, they are actually pretty quick and simple to make. Use lots of ribbon, lace and mesh fabrics to get the layered look. I’d suggest wearing a pair of leggings underneath, along with arm warmers and of course, fairy wings. If you think these are not  easy to make, please buy gothic fairy outfits from cu2nite costume online store.

Top Dress up Fancy Dress Costume Ideas for Adults – Costume Hits V Pirate Costumes

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes, Holiday around the world — cu2nite @ 3:12 PM

Renaissance-Faires-Costume

Decide how accurate you wish to be to the time period. Many pirates seen at renaissance faires are actually modeled after the pirates of the 18th century, known as the Golden Age of Piracy. Pirates did, however, exist, and in fact have existed since before the Middle Ages. So, you have a very free range as to whether to dress in the popular 18th century fashion or take a more truly renaissance theme. Likewise, you can choose a historically accurate route, or add your own creative flare.

  • Want to be truly historically accurate? Truth is, most female pirates (and there weren’t many) in the day dressed as male pirates, which isn’t the glamorous look portrayed in movies. Even captains, when working with their crews (as they often did), dressed very simply; breeches, a shirt, perhaps a vest, and often barefoot for better footing on deck. A sash was an important part of a sailor’s garb as well; it could be used as a belt, a headwrap, even a rag or towel for cleaning duties. Clothing was often quite ragged and worn as well, as pirates rarely had many articles of clothing to begin with.
  • If you prefer to go a more imaginative (and more popular route) as featured in the photo at the top of this article, there are three basic pieces that should be included in your garb: a blouse, a bodice, and skirts/breeches. Your blouse can be long-sleeved or short, but most importantly the sleeves should fit loosely, in a flowy or “poofed” style. This style provides a great contrast with the tightness of the bodice.
  • Your bottom half should be clothed in either breeches or skirts, or often in my case, both. The breeches can be either loose or fitted, but either way should be worn tucked into boots if you’re wearing them. You should either avoid modern closures (zippers or snaps) or try to hide them with accessories. Skirts should be cut very full; the best test is to put it on and spin. If the fabric flies out vertically and doesn’t just “bubble” it’s perfect for pirate garb. The reason for this is that most pirate skirts are worn in a hiked fashion, and you want plenty of fabric to work with to get that perfect wenchly, rakish look. Thrift stores are great for buying skirts and breeches; mine were all found at Goodwill and Salvation Army. Medical scrubs can work well if you want loose breeches as well.
  • Now, the bodice. This is one of the most important parts of your garb. My preferred bodice method is to buy a plain corset to wear under all of your garb to do the actual shaping and holding in, because this will lessen the strain on your outer bodice, which is often more decorative (and more expensive) than the underbodice. As far as the outerbodice is concerned (whether you opt for the underbodice or not), make sure that your bodice has STEEL boning, as if will last longer. You can find bodices online (especially at eBay), but it really is best to buy one at a faire (or at least in person) so that you can inspect it yourself and have the bodice’s seamstress show you how to properly lace yourself into it.
  • Footwear is important for two reasons; it must be accurate, and it must be comfortable. I don’t suggest going barefoot; faire grounds are usually made of dirt, stones, and lots
of stuff you don’t want your foot in, on, or embedded with. Your best safest bet is a pair of leather or faux-leather boots in either a slouched or cuffed fashion with less than a one-inch heel. Yes, stilettos are sexy, but you’re likely to be walking on uneven ground all day, and unless you like broken ankles, play it safe and smart. You want comfort AND style. I bought my thigh-high, cuffable, low-heeled leather boots from a renaissance vendor…they were $150, but they’ve lasted two faire seasons and have little more than scuffs, and are crazy comfortable. If you’re not digging boots, go with leather or cloth ballet flats. Anything not obviously modern.
  • Trinkets, treasures, effects…whatever you call them, accessories are key when putting together your garb. Starting from top to bottom…hats. Jack Sparrow’s obsession with his hat was not a solitary event; pirates do have a certain obsession with their hats. A pirate hat is a crowning glory, and it says a lot about the pirate’s personality. My own hat has at least two feathers in it, a leather rose from a friend, and often another embellishment or two depending on my mood. Next is belts. I love belts. You’ll love belts. Why? Because they keep you from carrying around the many, many things a pirate needs, like mugs, weapons, etc. I wear at least a belt and a rope around my waist and hips to hang my pouch, drinking vessel, flogger, etc. As far as weapons go, you need to check with the faire you’re going to attend to find out what their weapons policy is. That being said, keep your sword peace-tied.
  • As far as the rest of your accessories go….it’s all up to you! Layer on tons of gold and silver-toned jewelry; the gaudier, the better! Avoid plastic and any modern designs. Once again, thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army are fantastic for this. A fun part of choosing jewelry and accessories is making up stories about the pieces. I have a ring I claim I stole from a French queen, a chain of black pearls I claim to have received as a “payment for my services” from a certain pirate captain, etc. It’s all up to your imagination!

Top Dress up Fancy Dress Costume Ideas for Adults – Costume Hits IV Alice in Wonderland Costumes

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes, Party Costume — cu2nite @ 2:48 PM

alice-in-wonderland

An Alice in Wonderland themed costume party is a great idea for a birthday party, Halloween, or regular party. Both adults and children can enjoy going through the looking glass into this Wonderland celebration. There are many colorful characters to choose from, and costumes are commonly sold. If you want to dress up as Alice, making the right “Alice in Wonderland” party dress is the most important part. If you are a seamstress, you can make the dress yourself, or you can alter a dress or skirt to look similar. Once you recreate your “Alice in Wonderland” costume, it is simple to finish off the outfit with the right accessories.

Follow these steps to head down the rabbit hole to the best bash you’ve ever thrown:

  • An outdoor garden location is ideal for an Alice in Wonderland costume party. For a children’s party, the afternoon is best. For an adult party, have it outside at night and decorate with multi-colored lights to bring out the dark, weird side of Wonderland.
  • Write up a budget and guest list. Think about the number of guests when planning the food, drinks and activities.
  • Create and send Alice in Wonderland themed invitations. Send the invites at least 2 weeks in advance. However, if you send them a month in advance, you will have greater response and the guests will have more time to get costumes.
  • Begin a list of everything you need to purchase or gather for the Alice in Wonderland party so that you have everything ready for the event. Don’t forget to rent, buy or make your costume.

A cool homemade “Alice in Wonderland” party

homemade-alice-in-wonderland-costume

“Our group decided to go as the Alice in Wonderland party. We had The Cheshire Cat, The Queen of Hearts, The Mad Hatter (Tim Burton’s version), Alice, The Tea Party Rabbit and, of course, our Late White Rabbit (who is really late, by this we mean pregnant). Our Homemade Alice in Wonderland Group Costume was made by The Queen of Hearts. She put the most time and effort into the project, while The Mad Hatter helped with his costume. The Queen’s costume was all handmade from pieces of material that were sown together and some 16- gauge electric fence wire was used to make the bottom springy. On the back of her there was a smile of the Cheshire Cat.The Cheshire Cat was also, from head to toe, made from spare material. The Mad Hatter’s costume took, perhaps, the longest. The Hat was 100% constructed using cardboard, poster board, material, feather duster feathers, knitting needles and some 16-gauge electric fence wire. The suit was an old green suit that we spray-painted lightly with purple spray paint. The belt across the chest was just spools of thread woven with yarn on an old belt. Alice’s costume was an old blue dress with a white apron sown on top. The Tea Party Rabbit used a few colorful shirts and handmade ears that the Queen of Hearts constructed. The White Rabbit had a lady’s red overcoat. We took a foam circular ball, glued cotton balls onto it and then pinned it to the back for a tail. We also found an old clock and tied it to yarn to hang from her neck (so she wouldn’t have to hold it all night). All in all, we had the time of our lives and everyone loved our costumes. “

Top Dress up Fancy Dress Costume Ideas for Adults – Costume Hits II Fairy Costumes

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes — cu2nite @ 8:45 PM

fairy-costume-a

Fairies encompass magic and folklore. Usually taking the form of a tiny girl with wings, the term fairy offers many definitions and variations, from Tinker bell to guardian angel. It is a favorite among little girls.

Dress up Fairy / Princess Wings

The hottest tip for fairies is to make your own wings. Fairy wings can cost $20.00 to $50.00, so this is a real money saver.

  • Bend a hanger into a wing shape, then repeat with another hanger. Use pliers to twist the four ends of the hangers together so that the wings are attached.
  • Cut the legs off of a pair of tights. Cover each hanger with a leg of the tights, gathering the extra fabric at the ends of the hanger. Wrap the twisted ends of the hangers with the extra fabric.
  • Attach two lengths of ribbon where the hangers meet to hang the wings at your shoulders. Thick ribbon works best, or you can twist together many pieces of thin ribbon.

Make small wings if you are attending a crowded party! No one likes to get hit in the eye with a wing.

What Should I Wear to a Renaissance Festival?

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes — cu2nite @ 8:07 PM

When attending a renaissance festival, you should wear garb that is both historically correct and pertains to the persona you have chosen. Not everyone dresses up, you can wear street clothes if you like, but playing the part makes the experience worth the ticket price!

renaissance2

Historically accurate: There are a couple of attitudes on this one. Some people will say to avoid dressing like a Harry Potter character or a gothic vampire. Children can get away with dressing like fairies and the like, but the real ren-faire buffs will tell you that you should probably go for something more 16th century.

  • Absolute no-no’s for historical accuracy: No sneakers with skirts, avoid wristwatches, and sunglasses. For ideas, check out this medieval clothing gallery.

The other camp of people will tell you to dress however you darn well please! I am of this attitude, because ultimately a renaissance festival is a place to let go an have fun. : If your goal is to buy or create period costumes to achieve total historical accuracy, fine. But let’s let everyone else have a good time, too. Follow a ‘No Snarking’ rule. If someone hasn’t asked you if their costume is historically accurate, keep the condescending pointers to yourself. If a fellow patron actually asks you for advice, give them some helpful constructive critisism.

Wear a Nice Attitude

Not Like a Desperate Wench: Remember that bodices and corsets are meant to leave something to the imagination. Cleavage is good fun, but don’t hike your corset more than halfway. You’re not fooling anyone by doing this…everyone can tell. Skirts should be long with boots or slippers; not high heels. You wouldn’t want to walk around the festival grounds in heels, anyway.

Don’t Forget the Pirates! Remember, girls can be pirates, too. If you don’t like the idea of going wench, wear a pair of cotton pants with a blouse. Loop a long scarf through the pants and wear as a belt.

Are you a lady in waiting? A peasant wench? Dress according to how much money you imagine your ‘character’ would have to spend on clothes. Rich fabrics were only available to nobility, while drab neutral colors belonged to peasants.

DIY Halloween Bee Costume

Filed under: Buy Adult Fancy Dress Costumes, DIY Costumes — cu2nite @ 3:16 PM

Here’s a simple and inexpensive way to create a cute bumblebee costume.  You’ll need the following materials for your costume:

  • A bright yellow T-shirt, preferably long sleeve
  • Black fabric paint
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Pencil or marker
  • Girls plastic headband
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Black pom poms (1 inch size)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Large cone or plastic funnel (for stinger)
  • Black leggins or close-fitting sweat pants

Begin by marking horizontal lines on bodice of the yellow T-shirt, using the pencil or marker and the measuring device.  Leave a distance of about 2 inches between the lines, and continue each line around to the back of the shirt so the stripes will wrap around the person like the stripes on the body of a bee.  You should end up with a series of horizontal stripes, each about 2 inches in width that wrap around the bodice of the shirt.  Leave the sleeves alone.

Using the black fabric paint, color alternating stripes black, leaving the ones in between unpainted.  This will result in alternating stripes of black and yellow to simulate a striped pattern on a bee’s body.  You may want to place some cardboard inside the T-shirt before you paint it so the color doesn’t bleed through.  Allow the paint to dry overnight.  If you are in a hurry, you can speed up the drying process by using a blow dryer on the painted areas.  To add dimension, try using fabric “puff paint”.  This will actually puff up. Even of you used a blow dryer to dry the paint faster, it’s still best to let the paint cure overnight.

While the paint on the T-shirt is drying and curing, gather materials for the bee antennae.  You’ll need the headband, pipe cleaners, pom poms and glue gun.  Plug in the glue gun and allow the glue to heat up while you wrap the pipe cleaners around the headband to simulate antennae.  Secure each one with a dot of hot glue and gently press together until secure.  Now gently apply some hot glue to one of the pom poms and quickly set a pipe cleaner end into the glue.  Hold firmly in place until completely cooed and dried.  Now repeat with the other pipe cleaner and pom pom.  You should now have a headband with two antennae springing up from it like springy lollipops.

When the costume is ready to be worn, slip on the black leggings or stretchy pants and carefully insert the cone or funnel into the posterior section of the pants.  This will serve as the bee’s stinger.  There should be no need to secure the cone in place.  The stretchy pants should keep it secure.  Remember not to sit down or else you may “bee” surprised!  (By Mike Tattersall)
