How to Make a Pirate Costume: Male and Female Costumes

Pirates are back, and in a big way. Thanks to the success of the three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, people of all ages are once again very interested on how the pirates of the past dealt with the treacherous seven seas. Adults and children love playing dress up for costume balls and Halloween and unless you have Johnny Depp on speed dial, it is very hard to come up with a pirate costume.

Pirate clothing was never supposed to look perfect, new and sharp, so don’t worry about getting it too perfect. If you truly imagine what pirates had to go through — weeks, perhaps months of being on ships without taking a bath for days — it isn’t too surprising that most pirate clothing is torn, tattered and grimy. Pirates also come from different parts of the world so their outfits are probably a derivative of what the locals wear, or a hodgepodge of every piece of clothing that pirate has stolen from his exploits around the world.

  • The Clothes  are by far the most important aspect of your pirate costume! First let’s go through the items you will need to get and then we will explore where to find the clothes for pirate costumes.
  • Pants – The pants will preferably be black, although gray and brown are also options. There are two different ways in which you can create your pants. The first way is to get black pants that are a little tight. Do not get them so that they are so tight that they are uncomfortable, but tight enough so that they are snug to your skin. The second way its to get black pants that are quite baggy. After you get these pants you will take them and cut the bottoms of the legs off so that they are just below the knee. You should cut the bottoms in a zig zag pattern, so that they look old and worn out.
  • Skirts – If you are woman and you wish to dress up like a female pirate, all you need to do is get a black skirt instead of pants. The skirt for female pirate costumes can be long or short. If you choose a long skirt, the best is to get a peasant type of skirt. If you are looking to go with sexy pirate costumes, choose a short one, it is best to get something knee length so that you may take some scissors and tear up the bottom to cut it shorter and to make it look tattered and old.
  • Shirt – The shirt is simple. All you need to get is a white long sleeved button-up shirt. You will want to make sure that the shirt is not too dressy and not too business-like. The baggier the better, and you will want to leave a few buttons undone at the top. Remember that pirates weren’t always the cleanest of people either so feel free to try and stain it up a little bit, or even tear it in certain areas. If you are able to locate a long-sleeved white shirt that has ruffles on the cuffs and maybe even a Victorian style ruffle on the collar, then you are very lucky! This would suit a pirate costume well!
  • Vest – For the vest, you are looking for pretty much any black or red vest. Try to avoid any that might have designs on them, unless it is just a striped pattern or something which would still suit the costume. If you cannot find either of these colors, and you can find white, you should be able to dye the vest. You can find RIT dye at almost every craft store in the country. They are easy to use even if you have never used them before.

  • Pirate Costume Accessories: The accessories are also very important to the realistic pirate costume!
    • Boots – Pretty much any tall black boots will work. You can also use brown boots. Try to stay more with the army boot style rather than a work boot of some sort. If you are able to find the type of leather boot that folds over at the top, that would be great! For a woman, the boots can be a bit more extravagant. They can even be high-heeled to create the perfect pirate wench costume!
    • Hat or Bandanna – For long or short hair, these are great ways to accessorize your costume. Find yourself a pirate style hat, and put the bandanna on your head under it. The bandanna could either be black or red. You do not have to wear the hat, you can just wear the bandanna. If you do have longer hair, you might consider putting a few braids in your hair here and there to give it that authentic pirate look

BioShock 2’s Little Sisters invade Australian aquarium

The idea of living within Rapture sounds like a cool enough idea up until all hell breaks loose and you’ve turned yourself into an Adam addict, right? Unfortunately for Australia, it looks as though Little Sisters are invading one of their local larger aquariums and it’s only a matter of time until their Big Daddy’s show up to protect them.

In what I consider to be a very cool fashion shoot, 2K Games fan, Bianca, has brought their mischievous little icon to the real world in the form of cosplay. While not everyone is a fan of cosplaying, it goes without saying that this shoot is one for the ages. Just make sure you don’t mess with her, I heard her Big Sister is worse than her Daddy, oddly enough. The photos themselves were taken by Chris Pavlich.

10 Video Game Cosplay Costume Ideas

Boys, this time around we went for fresh characters and less traditional costumes.  Afterall, everybody else has Mario and Link covered.  In addition to having new characters, the list rates each costume on the difficulty of work and costs involved to make it as well as the materials you will need. As a reference, we tried to find photos of cosplayers with already completed costumes. In the cases where we could not find a cosplayer, we used an in-game screenshot or concept art to point you in the right direction.

    1) Nathan Drake
Nathan Drake is the cynical everyman protagonist in the popular Uncharted eries.  Nathan is a descendant of the famed explorer Sir Francis Drake, which we found out in his first adventure on the search for the lost city of El Dorado.

    Level of Difficulty: Easy
    Cost: Low
Materials Needed: All that is really needed is a long sleeved white undershirt, a dark gray overshirt that buttons at the top, a shoulder gun holster, a pair of old jeans, and a belt with a silver buckle.  If you want to add a bit more to your costume don’t forget to dye your hair black, add a necklace with a silver ring on it, and a few rolls in the dirt for added “adventurer” effect.

    2) Knight (Castle Crashers)

These are the brave little nights in multi-colored armor from the game Castle Crashers. You control your favorite Castle Crasher, also known as the blue guy, and smash and slash your way through some really fun levels.

Level of Difficulty: Moderate, you will have to use your well-developed art skills in this instance.
    Cost: Low
Materials Needed: This is a case where cardboard will not only work, but also work well in fitting the design of the costume. You will also need some flat hobby paint for your knight color of choice. The most difficult part will likely be curving the helmet to look, well, curved.
