Even Pandas Look Good in YSL!

ysl classics

If you’re a fan of the world’s most fashionable bunny — Fifi Lapin — then it’s likely you’ll find Benda just as endearing. These uber-fashionable panda bears by Chinese artist Ben Liu (currently an art student living in Quebec, Canada) can be see in everything from Yves Saint Laurent couture to stylish super-heroin costumes. (They’ve even been spotted dressed as Andy Warhol and painted into “The Kiss” by Klimt.) I’m just crossing my fingers that he’ll continue to evolve Benda post-graduation. After all, it would be such a waste to see such a fashionable panda disappear.

Girl Wears Bird Costume – Birds and Eggs Festival

Filed under: Holiday around the world — cu2nite @ 7:18 PM

bird costume

A girl wearing a bird costume rides on a float during a street dance competition as part of the Birds and Eggs festival (locally known as Ibon and Ebon festival) in the town of Candaba, Pampanga province north of Manila on February 5, 2010. The festival is held to coincide with the migration of thousands of birds flocking to the town’s swamp to breed. The Candaba swamps — covered in reeds and water hyacinths and bisected by high earthen levees — are a key staging ground for birds ranging from huge purple herons to tiny Arctic warblers that return to continental Asia in the spring.

See, in fashion there’s something called Women’s Ready-to-Wear. They have whole haute couture shows of it. It’s basically anything you can imagine, no matter how freakish.

FRANCE-FASHION/

Awesome! What if I was invited suddenly to ah, um, one of those Tomato Rabbit parties, which could happen. Wow! And if I had to be in a horse race where the jockeys have the body of a human but the head of a grotesque insect? Or wait! Let’s say The Rapture comes, and I need something to wear!

Louis Vuitton Black Silk Bunny Ear Hair Band

This $300 LV headband option, but unfortunately it’s a little out of my budget right now. What about you?  Would you wear designer bunny ears if money was no object? Do you think they’re real-life wearable, or are they good for editorials and fashion parties only? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Would You Wear… Designer Bunny Ears?

bunny-ears-trend

Designers like Marc Jacobs are known to push fashion boundaries and send us outside our sartorial comfort zones. That’s part of what makes them so great – constant designer innovation means more experimentation and new trends to try in real life.

But are designer bunny ears a fashion risk worth taking or too editorial for normal-person wear? You be the judge in this week’s Would You Wear.

The whole designer bunny ears trend can be credited to Louis Vuitton Fall 2009, where designer Marc Jacobs sent various bunny-eared models down the runway. According to Jacobs, who finally explained the bunny ears this summer, the idea came about almost by accident, when he saw a member of his design team wearing fabric tied around her head in a bow that resembled ears. In the interview, Jacobs said “I like the kind of Playboy, French coquette aspect to it.”

Following in Marc’s footsteps, famous hat designer Maison Michel did a line of veiled animal ear headbands, which were spotted recently on the always fashion-forward Olsen twins at an Opening Ceremony party.

Personally, I think this trend is adorable, but I don’t think I’d ever wear a pair in real life! I might make an exception for a more toned-down, bow-like version like this LV headband option, but unfortunately it’s a little out of my budget right now. What about you?

Would you wear designer bunny ears if money was no object? Do you think they’re real-life wearable, or are they good for editorials and fashion parties only? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Fashion Inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland

Filed under: Halloween & Fancy Dress Party, Party Costume — cu2nite @ 3:30 PM

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland brought in 116 million dollars in the United States alone on its opening weekend. In addition to its box office success, Alice in Wonderland was extremely successful in the fashion department.

While watching this movie (all three times I saw it), I could not take my eyes off the incredible and inspirational clothes worn by the various characters. If you want to channel a little Alice in your daily life, here is some fashion inspiration from Wonderland:

1. Alice

Alice Picture

Alice Picture

Alice, as most of you know, is the main character of the movie. Her style is feminine, but not overly feminine, and she is always wearing a beautiful shade of sky blue. Alice has a very effortless look that’s never rigid, because she tends to partake in adventures that require comfy clothes. In addition, most of her dresses have a vintage feel, so a thrift shop would likely be a great place to find Alice-inspired clothes.

2. The Red Queen

Red Queen Picture

Red Queen Picture

The Red Queen is an evil queen with an abnormally large head. As her name implies, she adores the color red, perhaps because it rhymes with her favorite saying, “Off with their head!” In addition to the color red, the Red Queen also adores the colors black and gold. Her favorite symbol is the heart, and she tends to wear structured clothing with an almost gothic look.

3. The White Queen

The Red Queen’s sister, the White Queen, is a beautiful, good queen who adorns herself in all white. The only color on her entire body is her deep shade of burgundy lipstick. Her style is ultra-feminine, with lots of pearls and lacy details.

4. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum

The adorably funny twin brothers, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, keep the audience giggling throughout the movie. Not only are the brothers humorous, but their fashion sense is also pretty interesting and easy to imitate. The twins always wear stripes, shorts and suspenders. Add a pop of color, and you’ve got their style!

5. The Mad Hatter

Ah, the Mad Hatter, my favorite character in the movie. The Mad Hatter is a crazy, eclectic hat maker with bright orange hair and lime green eyes. He always looks colorful, even though his basic coat and pants are neutral. He achieves this by wearing bright eye makeup, a brightly colored scarf, and of course, his hat. If you’re looking for a standout hat, discount stores like Stein Mart, T.J. Maxx, and Marshall’s always have a great selection of really expensive and beautiful hats for dirt cheap.

What Do I Wear There? Dress up Parties and Events

Filed under: Halloween & Fancy Dress Party, Party Costume — cu2nite @ 3:27 PM

Themed Event Essentials

If you are attending a themed event and don’t want to purchase a new outfit but are at a loss for what you could create from your own pieces, check for these basics first:

The best way to create a look without spending any money is to experiment with your hair and makeup! A can of hairspray can take you far, creating looks ranging from 80’s Madonna to fauxhawked punk rocker with a few quick sprays. Hair pins are also essential to crafting unique hairstyles, especially if you are going for a period look that involves an updo.

Makeup basics like lipstick or eyeliner are great for dramatic looks as well, as they can easily take you from classic siren (red lips, winged liner) to futuristic cyber babe (hot pink, purple, or black lipstick/liner) to gothic vamp (lots of dark eyeliner and maybe some black lipstick).

Accessories also go a long way in transforming you into a whole new person. A simple ribbon, for example, is a great thing to have lying around your dorm room, since you can use it as a headband (think “Alice” from “Alice in Wonderland” or Blair from “Gossip Girl”), a bowtie (if you’re dressing up as a boy), or as a belt to cinch in a tunic or dress.

Necklaces are another example of an easy way to create a themed look. A long, gold chain necklace can be great as “bling” for a “white trash” party or can also add some sparkle to a period look. Of course, pearls are an absolute must as well – they’re great for flapper costumes, 80’s looks, dressing up as a business woman, and so much more. Knee socks are also great to have on hand for a sports-themed party.

As for clothes, they can be a bit tricky depending on your exact theme. A LBD goes a long way for most themed parties, as it is an easy piece to accessorize. Super cheap Hanes tanks or tees are also awesome, as you can easily cut them up or write on them to fit your theme. Blazers can also go a long way in transforming you into a business woman, a “man,” or even (as I recently found) the “Mad Hatter” from Alice in Wonderland!

Ask Your Friends!

If you read the above suggestions and are still at a loss for what to wear, my next suggestion is to check with your friends. This is especially helpful if you are dressing up as a male character, for example, as obviously guys would have the best male wardrobes! You and your friends may find it helpful to pool some of your clothes together before the event in order to create totally original looks from your combined closets.

Just be sure that if you do choose to borrow clothes or accessories from your friends that you take special care to ensure they are safely returned. (This is super important if you are going to an event like a frat party where beer is probably going to be spilled on you.)

The “One Accessory” Trick

Sometimes, after you’ve tried all your friends and searched through your closet, you may have no choice but to make a purchase in order to create a look. This does not mean you have to buy an entirely new outfit, though! The best trick I have picked up is to purchase a single piece that you can use to define your look. For example, if you were going to a “High School Stereotypes” themed event, you could buy a pair of oversize glasses to be a “nerd” or a jersey to be a “jock.”

In the picture above, some friends and I were able to transform ourselves into “Great Gatsby”-worthy fashionistas with simple accessories such as pearls, feathers, and even cigarette holders (without actual cigarettes in them, of course!) found at a vintage store that we just added on top of dresses we already had. A simple hat, mask, or wig can also do the trick for a last-minute costume!

Themed Event/Party Ideas

So you read this article but don’t have a themed event or party coming up? I recommend you throw one of your own! Don’t have a specific occasion in mind? I have found that throwing themed parties is a great way to raise money for a charity, just in case you needed an excuse.

Here are some themes that I have found fun in the past, whether for a larger group fundraiser or simply for a fun party with you and some friends:

  • Masquerade Ball: This is a super easy theme to pull off, as all anyone needs to do is buy a mask and throw on their favorite party dress!
  • Period Theme: I have referenced this theme a few times in the article, as it is one of my favorites. Pick your favorite decade as the theme, or allow all the guests to pick their own decade and come decked-out in retro looks. So much fun!
  • Favorite Character Theme: Have people come dressed as their favorite book, TV, or movie character–the fun is in guessing who’s who!
  • Color Theme: This is a great theme for a simple fundraising party. Many causes are associated with colors (for example, Breast Cancer is associated with the color pink), so have guests wear this color and be sure to decorate and serve food in your specific color as well.
  • High School Stereotypes: Poke fun at your high school self by dressing up as an exaggerated “stereotypical” high school student, such as a nerd, jock, cheerleader, etc.
  • Met Gala: If you have friends who are as interested in fashion as you are, try holding your own “Met Costume Institute Gala.” Held every year to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, the Gala is always attended by the absolute A-list of fashion, being recently hosted by style royalty like Kate Moss. This year’s Gala will be held on May 3 with the theme

2010 Halloween Costume Ideas III: Inspired by Hollywood Celebrities

Costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils, or in more recent years such science fiction-inspired characters as aliens and superheroes. Let’s review the Hollywood celebrities from last year and see what will be a trend this year!

Alice In Wonderland Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Dishes On Making Eccentric Ensembles

alice-in-wonderland-costume

Costume designer Colleen Atwood had quite the challenge in creating the clothes for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” She talked to WWD about her avoiding “cliche,” “drug store Halloween” costumes and her final ensembles.

Perhaps most impressive is Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen get-up.

First, Atwood made Bonham Carter’s head seem larger by outfitting the actress with a dress she describes as “tipped to Elizabethan” with a nipped-in waist and high collar. Then, the hair and makeup team fitted the actress with a prosthetic forehead that pushed her hairline back and a heart-shaped wig that weighed three pounds (“which doesn’t sound like a lot,” notes Baliel, “but when you’re just supporting it, it really is”). On top of that, Bonham Carter’s head was digitally enhanced to appear three times its normal size. Though Atwood demurs, “I think her acting did the intimidating, not the costume.”

2010 Halloween Costume Ideas Part II: Lady Gaga

Filed under: Halloween & Fancy Dress Party, Party Costume — cu2nite @ 11:10 AM

lady-gaga-quelle-universal

If you’re looking for a celebrity-based Halloween costume that’ll be instantly recognisable – not to mention fun to wear – look no further than Lady Gaga! This is actually a really simple costume to do for 2010: here’s what you’ll need…

1. A blonde wig
It’s up to you to decide whether you prefer Lady Gaga’s short bob or long locks. If you’re already blonde, you can skip the wig entirely, and move onto…

2. A hair bow
Not a bow that goes in your hair, but a bow that looks like it’s made out of hair. You can buy these on eBay too, or we found some for sale here…

3. A body-suit
In terms of the clothes you’ll need for your Lady Gaga Halloween costume, it’s really just a case of “the more outrageous, the better”. Anything PVC or highly revealing will work, but if you’re looking for something simple, a classic Lady Gaga look is a body suit with nothing on the bottom half.

4. PVC or laddered leggings

good-and-evil-leggings

Don’t want to go down the body-suit route? These laddered leggings aren’t nearly as extreme as the kind Lady Gaga herself wears, but they will at least keep you covered. If you’re looking to create a costume on a budget, buy a pair of footless tights and ladder them yourself – alternatively, a lot of stores are currently stocking wet look styles, which will also work for a Lady Gaga Halloween costume. For the top half, a longline bra or crop top will work fine.

5. Sunglasses She doesn’t wear her sunnies ALL the time, just most of the time. Gaga tends to favour Ray Bans, but any dark glasses will do – just make sure you don’t remove them, no matter how dark it gets.

7. Pale lipstick Pale pink, verging on white will give you the authentic Lady Gaga look.

8. A teacup and saucer The ultimate Lady Gaga Halloween costume accessory. Pour whatever you’re drinking into the cup so you don’t have to put it down – Lady Gaga wouldn’t!

Or try good and evil leggings in black and white! This is a pair of sequined leggings with mismatched legs. You could even call them a crime of fashion. If you wanted to be particularly cruel, you could call them the court jester’s dress clothes. [fashionpolice.com Sep 2009]

I really like the fresh perpective you did on the issue. Really was not expecting that when I started off studying. Your concepts were easy to understand that I wondered why I never looked at it before. Glad to know that there’s an individual out there that definitely understands what he’s discussing. Great job!

2010 Halloween Costume Ideas Part I: Audrey Hepburn/Holly Golightly Outfit clothes

Filed under: Halloween & Fancy Dress Party, Party Costume — cu2nite @ 10:58 AM

Holly-Golightly-Outfit-clothes

Here’s the first glimpse of what the celebrities wore for Halloween last year.  Nicky Hilton dressed as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s! This will be a trend for this year’ Halloween or any dress up parties, not horror or sexy, but very classic :p

It is also the perfect Halloween costume for anyone who loves fashion and is just looking for an excuse to to get dressed up. Here’s what you’ll need….

Audrey Hepburn/Holly Golightly Outfit clothes

1. A little black dress
Most women already have a little black dress of some description, and if you don’t, you won’t have to look too hard to find one. Audrey’s dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s had a low-cut back, so if you can find one similar, so much the better. If you can’t, though, don’t worry – as long as the dress is slim-fitting and black, it’ll work.

2. Pearls
Not just one string, but lots of them. In the movie, Holy Golightly’s pearls fall down her back and clasp at the front with a huge diamante clasp. Again, don’t worry too much about copying this look exactly: with the combination of any slim black dress and any string of pearls, you’re already on the way to the perfect Audrey Hepburn Halloween costume.

3. Black elbow-length gloves Easily found in any accessory store, and in lots of high street chains too, at this time of year.

4.  A tiara Raid Claire’s Accessories, eBay, or charity stores for any kind of sparkly hair ornament that you can nestle into your beehive. Speaking of which

5. A cigarette holder Found on eBay, in any joke store, or you can make your own easily enough by finding a long, thin twig and painting it black.

Hi, I really admire the design of your site. What design are you using?
