6 Ideas for Group Party Costumes

Is your sorority, group of friends throwing a costume party bash? Wearing matching costumes will help you keep up with each other and let your guests know who’s in charge should they need something. Here are some ideas you can use.

Group Halloween costume 1. Boy Band: Whether you want to be the Backstreet Boys, Boys II Men, The Monkees, New Edition, New Kids on the Block, or NSYNC, all your really need to make this costume work are matching shirts and goofy hairstyles.

Group Halloween costume 2. Dancers: If you want to be a group of dancers, your first choice is to figure out what kind of dancer you want to be. You can be belly dancers, ballerinas, tap dancers, jazz dancers, Irish folk dancers or flash dancers. You can get matching costumes from your local dance or costume shop.

Group Halloween costume 3. Cheerleaders: Your only must-have for this group costume is pom poms. The rest of the costume can be as simple as white t-shirts and short denim jeans. If you want to get fancy, however, you can go as far as to purchase real cheerleader uniforms for around $50 each. Matching sweats will work well, too.

Group Halloween costume 4. Sports team: Do you and your friends have a favorite sports team? If so, many of you may have jerseys for that team. Add the appropriate sports equipment, which most of you will probably also own, and you have a complete team. If you and your friend route for opposing teams, another option is for each person to be their own favorite player. Your options are numerous from golf to basketball to hockey.

Group Halloween costume 5. Bowling pins and ball: A fun costume for a group might be bowling pins and a ball. For the pins, you all need white pants and hooded sweatshirts. Put two red stripes around the neck area. The shortest person would probably be the ball (or whoever draws the short stick). For the ball costume, you can cut two large felt circles and attach them at the top (over the shoulders) and the sides (under the arms) ad three smaller circles for the holes. These costumes can also be purchased online in vinyl.

Group Halloween costume 6. Bridesmaids: Pick up matching dresses at a discount department store. You can pick up simple, inexpensive formals and matching shoes. Add cheap bouquets, and you are an instant group of bridesmaids.

Organise a Fancy Dress Party

fancy-dress-costume

A Fancy dress or costume party is always great fun to organise and to attend – and it doesn’t have to be reserved for specific times of year – Halloween, for example. With fancy dress shops and hire companies providing a myriad of outfits and accessories all year round, a fancy dress party is easy to organise and guarantees a brilliant night’s partying!

Why Have Fancy Dress?
As well as being the obvious choice for certain parties – Halloween costumes on the 31st of October, for instance, fancy dress helps to break down barriers – despite being ‘dressed up’ people feel more confident and less aware of how they look – no agonising over the right length of cocktail dress for example, or if everyone else will be in suits. Fancy dress also provides people with a talking point and acts as a good ice breaker for mixed groups of people who may not know each other.

Planning Your Party
When planning a fancy dress party the key to a smooth event and happy guests is to send the invites out early – this is especially important if all your attendees are local and will be tracking down that must have outfit from the same shop. Giving people time to decide what to wear and prepare their costume is crucial. Also consider the implications of going for a themed fancy dress – your guests might find your chosen idea impossible to work around if it is too specific or way out. Consider too the ages and numbers of your guests – for example, your Granny might not want to strut her stuff in a Moulin Rouge costume, and anything that involves ‘big’ outfits and accessories (astronaut costumes for example) might cause space issues.

Practicalities of Fancy Dress
As fun as fancy dress is, the practical side of hosting a costume party must always be considered when you are in the planning stages: do you have hire shops close by, will people be able to source costumes easily, is the venue suitable for a fancy dress party, is the occasion suitable for fancy dress, would the idea of dressing up result in some invitees turning down the invite? Plan, prepare, take your guests’ ages and needs into account, and don’t be too vague or specific on themes and your party is sure to be a huge hit!

When Scary becomes too Sexy, Mum!

lady bug

Costume retailers have found a way to make even the tamest characters look risque. You think there is no way to make a ladybug sexy? Think again. And witches are scary and ugly—certainly not sexy.Don’t be too sure! While these ultra-sexy costumes are presumably marketed to adults, in many cases they are also sold in teen and even pre-teen sizes. Many costume retailers report that sales of sexy costumes to young girls are on the rise. Your child will probably have friends who wear something that you would consider way too mature for a teen. Young girls who feel pressure to look sexy are likely to feel it even more on Halloween.
So your best bet is to spell out some rules to your teen before they even start developing their Halloween costume ideas. While you might want to grant some freedom of expression, you also probably want to limit the amount of skin your teen can show. With a little creativity you can help her come up with something that will make her feel feminine, glamorous–and even grown-up—but that will also keep you in your comfort zone.
